Kalaeloa / Barbers Point Area Description PDF Download

Kalaeloa is located on the Ewa Plain on the west side of the island of Oahu, Hawaii and is bounded by the Pacific Ocean and the lands within Roosevelt, West Perimeter, East Hansen and Essex Roads.  It is situated within two of Oahu's fastest-growing communities, the City of Kapolei and Ewa Beach with access to the area from the City of Kapolei via Fort Barrette Road and via Geiger Road from Ewa Beach.

The Kalaeloa community encompasses the entire former Barbers Point Naval Air Station and covers an area of approximately 3,700 acres.  Upon the Naval Air Station's closure in 1999, approximately 1,050 acres were retained by the Navy, with 472 acres transferred to other federal agencies and the remaining 2,165 acres made available to various state and city agencies.

Development activity in the area was limited to improvements of the Kalaeloa Airport , Barbers Point Golf Course and the Hawaii National Guard properties.  The absence of development was mainly due to the potential home porting of an aircraft carrier strike group at Pearl Harbor and the possibility of stationing the aircraft carrier's air wing at Kalaeloa.  These plans were not realized and although most of Kalaeloa remains undeveloped, there is a community that consists of diverse uses.

  • Rental Housing:  548 residential rental units, which consist of 520 townhomes and 28 single family homes.

The vision for Kalaeloa includes redevelopment of the area and the addition of commercial, environmental, educational, recreational and other uses that will complement existing users.

Kalaeloa offers the potential to create a dynamic and vibrant community, while creating jobs and promoting an environment that can be integrated with mass transit and is located close to schools, beaches, recreational areas and cultural and natural resources.
